Campus police enforces rules and regulations of Queens University of Charlotte to include all state law and city ordinances. Campus Police may arrest for any crime that is committed on campus and may request assistance from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, Highway Patrol and Division of Motor Vehicles.
Reports are written for all incidents that occur on campus and are handled by the Campus Police. All reports are forwarded to Student Life for review by the Dean.
There are different types of reports than an incident may be written on depending on the severity of the incident. They are as follows:
-
Campus Report: This type of report is written when there has been a violation of campus policy but no law has been broken.
-
State Incident Report: These reports may be written for any crime that occurs on campus or any incident that involves damage to property, larceny, vandalism, break and entering. These reports are sent to the North Carolina Criminal Justice Department and are also kept on file at Campus Police.
-
State Accident Report: These reports are written for all vehicle accidents that occur on or around campus. These reports are sent to the Division of Motor Vehicles and are also kept on file at the Campus Police office. Individuals may receive a copy of this report within three business days after the report has been taken by coming by Campus Police.
Campus Police officers may issue citations for any violation of campus policy, any crime or infraction committed on or near campus. There are various types of citations depending on the severity and location of the offense. The different types of citations that you may receive from Campus Police are as follows:
-
Queens University of Charlotte Citation- These citations are issued for all offenses that occur on campus and are not crimes. This is a civil penalty only, issued by the University, and is not reported to any off campus agency. These citations may be paid in person or by mail. You may rebuke the citation by coming to the Campus Police and filling out an appeal form. The appeal will be reviewed by the campus traffic board, and all reviews are final.
-
North Carolina State Citation- These citations may be issued for any crime or infraction that occurs on campus. This citation is the same one that would be issued by a city, county, or state official, and a court appearance may be mandatory for some offenses. The issuing officer will inform you of the offense, fine and court date. The officer will also let you know if mandatory court appearance is required or if you can pay the fine by mail. The only way to appeal this citation is to appear in court. If you wish to pay the fine by mail, you must do so by the court date. If you fail to pay the fine by the court date or do not appear in court, a warrant may be issued for your arrest. By paying the citation, you are admitting to responsibility for the offense. All offenses written on this ticket will become part of your permanent criminal or driving record.
-
City Parking Citation- This citation is written if you are in violation of a city ordinance. This citation will be issued if you are parked improperly on any road that surrounds campus. This is a civil penalty only and will not be recorded on your driving record. This citation can only be paid to the city, and any appeal must be done through the city.
Campus Police offers every student an opportunity to become familiar with the rules and regulations before issuing any citation. There are times when verbal and written warnings are issued. Do not look at other vehicles to see if you are parked properly; they may be parked improperly. At the beginning of year, as students come in, they are given a copy of the parking rules and regulations along with a parking sticker. Students are also given a map which shows them where they can park.
