This program will begin with a week-long service project to be based in the Cape Town area. This project, yet to be determined, will allow students to connect with locals and put into action Queens’ motto. Lodging for this part of the study tour could include home stays. After this, students will begin to explore the history, landscape and culture of Cape Town and the surrounding region. Visits will include Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela and many others were imprisoned during the Apartheid era), the South African National Gallery and the Castle of Good Hope. Day trips outside of the city will include a tour of the Cape Peninsula’s small towns, scenic vistas and the African Penguin colony and an exploration of the Wineland. From Cape Town, the study tour will head toward Kruger National Park, one of the world’s most famous natural preserves for a short “safari” where students may see many of the continent’s wildlife in their natural habitat. Finally, in the Johannesburg area, we will take in a tour of Soweto Township, with its Art Museum and Apartheid Museum.
>There is a $890 program supplement charged for this study tour. For participants who pay their own expenses, the cost – inclusive except for lunches, most dinners, and incidentals – is $3700.
