CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19, 2005) — The Joseph W. Grier Jr. Distinguished Professor Award was established in honor of the former chairman of the Queens University of Charlotte Board of Trustees.
Nominations for this award are solicited from members of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Board, from faculty, staff and administration, as well as from representatives of the Student Government Association. The recipient must have made an outstanding contribution to Queens University of Charlotte and the teaching and learning process.
The 2005 recipient holds a bachelor’s degree from Queens and a master of arts degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She began teaching at Queens part-time in 1994 and joined the faculty full-time in 2002.
She is a gifted professor who has served Queens in many ways: as a teacher and team leader in the Core Program in the Liberal Arts as well as in the English department, as director of the Learning Center, a co-leader of John Belk International Program tours, a member of the Student Qualifications Committee, the Freshman Year Committee, the Senior Year Experience Committee and as a representative to the Publications Board. In addition she has interviewed scholarship applicants and worked at majors fairs, participated in Room in the Inn and served as faculty advisor for the Campus Democrats and Signet.
She is praised by students as an encouraging and enthusiastic teacher whose "energy, knowledge and research are clearly evident in every class." Students regard her as both caring and demanding.Her colleagues commend her outstanding work with students and her commitment to service. "She has met each new task with a dedication and energy that is rare for any teacher." "Her joy for teaching, her enthusiasm for the subject matter, her willingness to move heaven and earth to reach the most unreachable student is awe inspiring and more than a bit humbling. Few professors can match her level of commitment to teaching. Few students fail to recognize it."
